The Pittsburgh Steelers could face the Cleveland Browns backup.

The Pittsburgh Steelers could face the Cleveland Browns backup quarterback in Week 1 of the 2023 NFL season, depending on the status of Deshaun Watson. Watson is currently serving a six-game suspension for violating the league's personal conduct policy, but he could be eligible to return in Week 7. If Watson is still suspended in Week 1, the Browns will likely start Jacoby Brissett as their quarterback.

Brissett is a competent backup quarterback, but he is not on the same level as Watson. Watson is a Pro Bowl quarterback who is capable of leading the Browns to a deep playoff run. If the Steelers face Brissett in Week 1, they will have a better chance of winning.

However, the Steelers should not underestimate Brissett. He has experience starting in the NFL, and he is surrounded by talented players on offense, such as Nick Chubb, Kareem Hunt, and Amari Cooper. The Steelers will need to play their best game in order to defeat the Browns, even if they are starting their backup quarterback.

Here are some things that the Steelers can do to prepare for the possibility of facing Brissett in Week 1:

  • Study Brissett's film. The Steelers need to familiarize themselves with Brissett's strengths and weaknesses. They need to know his favorite targets, his tendencies in the passing game, and his mobility.
  • Put pressure on Brissett. The Steelers have a strong pass rush, led by T.J. Watt. They need to get pressure on Brissett in order to force him into mistakes.
  • Limit the Browns' running game. The Browns have a strong running game, led by Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt. The Steelers need to limit the Browns' running game in order to keep them from controlling the clock and sustaining drives.

If the Steelers can do these things, they will have a good chance of defeating the Browns, even if they are starting their backup quarterback.
